Welcome to Inclusion at Parkwood
At Parkwood Academy, we value the individuality of the children in our care. We are committed to giving every child the opportunity to achieve their full potential, and we do this by taking account of each individual’s life experiences and needs.
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum and have high expectations for all children, irrespective of ethnicity, faith, attainment, age, gender, disability or background. Children with SEND are fully included in all aspects of school life. This includes after school activities, trips and in Year 6 a residential experience. The school plans well to meet the needs of all pupils so that they actively participate and have the same opportunities as children with no SEN/D.

A Foundation of Compassion: Inclusion and Wellbeing at Parkwood Academy
At Parkwood Academy, inclusion is the beating heart of everything we do. We believe that every child deserves a profound sense of belonging and an equitable education, regardless of their background or needs. This commitment is deeply rooted in our understanding of Trauma-Informed Practice, which underpins our school culture. Our staff are trained to see every child through a lens of compassion and understanding, recognising that some of our pupils may face unique struggles at various points in the school day.
A critical part of our approach is to view all behaviour as communication. When a child struggles, we look beyond the action to understand the underlying need. We recognise that emotional regulation is a skill that must be learned, and we proactively use the Zones of Regulation framework across the school to teach our children crucial emotional literacy.
We understand that a child in distress cannot learn or problem-solve. Therefore, our staff are trained to prioritise calming the child first. Before any restorative solutions can be sought or conversation can begin, we ensure the child feels safe, regulated, and ready to re-engage with their learning.
This compassionate foundation complements our robust network of inclusive support:
- Quality First Teaching: Ensuring core instruction is adapted and accessible for all.
- The HUB and Nurture Provision: Tailored academic and social-emotional interventions.
- Pastoral Support & School Counsellor: Prioritizing the mental health of our pupils.
- The WIN (What I Need) Room: A flexible resource for individualized, in-the-moment support.
By weaving empathy, regulation, and targeted support into the fabric of our school, we ensure that every child at Parkwood feels truly valued, safe, and empowered to succeed.
