Year 4

Parkwood Academy

Welcome to Y4

In Year 4, teachers will nurture and encourage independent thinking, learning, and decision making in your child.

Your child will get to know more complex punctuation like inverted commas and apostrophes, will learn key spellings, and will continue to develop their reading and writing. This is also the first year most children will graduate from using a pencil to using a pen – this can be a great incentive to improve handwriting!

Year 4 focuses on deepening core skills, featuring a statutory multiplication tables check, expanded 4-digit arithmetic, and complex writing tasks. Key subjects include fractions, decimals, perimeter, electricity, states of matter, and history topics like the Romans or Anglo-Saxons.

Key Academic Focus Areas

  • Maths: Mastery of 6, 7, 9, 25, and 1000 times tables, formal column addition/subtraction, understanding fractions greater than 1, and calculating area/perimeter.
  • English: Writing organised paragraphs, using fronted adverbials, correctly punctuating direct speech, and increasing reading fluency.
  • Science: Topics typically include teeth and digestion, living things/habitats, electricity, sound, and states of matter.
  • Computing: Programming, monitoring, and controlling products, including using software to design.
  • Foundation Subjects: History (e.g., Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Stone Age), Geography (e.g., rivers, mountains), Art, and Design Technology.NCETM +4
