Key strengths

  • Behaviour and attendance: The school’s approach to attendance and behaviour is thoughtful and well-considered. Leaders work closely with vulnerable pupils and their families, which has led to marked improvements in both attendance and behaviour this year.
  • Personal development: The school strongly prioritizes personal development. Pupils are taught important values such as democracy and equality, and they benefit from a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs (such as music, dance, and football). They also enjoy taking on leadership roles.
  • Pastoral care: Pupils feel well-supported and value the extra help they receive through the school’s nurture and “WIN” (What I Need) programmes.
  • Mathematics: In some subjects, such as maths, the curriculum planning is specific and highly detailed. Staff are well-trained and pupils learn well in these areas.

Key challenges

  • Staffing and leadership turbulence: The school has experienced significant staff turnover since the previous inspection, leaving many leaders and staff new to their roles. While new changes and systems have been introduced, they are not yet fully embedded and have not yet had the desired impact.
  • Curriculum inconsistencies: Outside of strong subjects like maths, staff do not always have a secure understanding of the precise knowledge pupils need to learn. As a result, teachers do not always confidently teach or check how well pupils are grasping the intended curriculum.
  • Governance: Trustees need to clarify roles and responsibilities across all layers of governance. They must ensure there are precise systems in place to monitor, challenge, and hold school leaders appropriately accountable.

Overall Effectiveness: Requires Improvement (2024)

While the school has made strides in creating a positive environment for its pupils, inconsistencies in teaching, leadership, and early years provision mean that the overall quality of education requires improvement.

  • Behaviour and attitudes: Good
  • Personal development: Good
  • Quality of education: Requires improvement
  • Leadership and management: Requires improvement
  • Early years provision: Requires improvement
