Design and Technology (DT)

Parkwood Academy

Meet our D&T Lead

Mr. Childs is an extraordinarily enthusiastic leader of Design and Technology (D&T) at Parkwood, bringing infectious energy to the subject.

He is deeply passionate about D&T, which is reflected in his dedication to providing every student with rich, practical experiences.

Under his guidance, children are not only taught the fundamental skills of designing and creating but are also encouraged to become thoughtful critics of their own work.

Mr. Childs ensures that students leave Parkwood with the confidence and ability to thoughtfully critique their designs, understand the importance of making iterations, and ultimately improve their creations, fostering a true iterative design mindset. Ask your child the following questions about their design and technology learning this half term.

Parkwood Dinner Table Quiz

This isn’t just any quiz; this is a chance to spark designing conversations right at the dinner table. Forget right or wrong answers—this is about exploring the fun of creativity together. Here is a Design and Technology Dinner Table Quiz, broken down by questions.

How to Play

  • Materials: All you need is a conversation leader and hungry minds.
  • The Goal: There are no “points.” The goal is to listen, share ideas, and maybe dream up some new designs!
  • A Simple Rule: Everyone at the table must try to answer each question before moving to the next.

Primary School Design and Technology Quiz: The Big (Inventive) Questions (These questions explore the fun, feeling, and creativity of learning design and technology.)

Question 1: The Super Snack Helper Imagine you could invent a magical robot to help you with snack time! But robots need a specific command to start working.

  • What is the one super helpful task your robot would do for you (like pouring milk, opening wrappers, or even making toast)?
  • And what would be the ‘input’—the special signal you give—that tells it to start doing that task?

Question 2: The Marshmallow Tower Challenge Have you ever tried to build something super tall using just spaghetti and marshmallows? It’s not as easy as it looks! To make it stand up without falling over, you need to use strong shapes.

  • What is one specific, strong shape you would use a lot of in your marshmallow tower?
  • And where would you put that shape to give your tower the best support?

Question 3: The Ultimate Treehouse Design Design and technology isn’t just about robots; it’s about building amazing things that people can enjoy! Think about your dream treehouse.

  • If you could add one incredible, futuristic feature to your treehouse (like a solar-powered smoothie bar, a water slide into a pool, or a holographic storytelling room), what would it be?
  • And how would that feature work to make the treehouse even better?
